Okonkwo expressed disappointment over what he described as a disregard for the welfare of the people, arguing that the move will ultimately harm residents rather than political elites. His remarks come amid heightened tensions following the legal battle over the legitimacy of the state’s House of Assembly.

Speaking on the political crisis, Okonkwo emphasized that governance should prioritize the well-being of citizens rather than political power struggles.

He condemned those who see the situation as a victory, insisting that their focus is on personal gain rather than the suffering of ordinary Rivers residents. He further stressed that such actions expose the real motives behind the ongoing crisis, which he believes are driven by power and resource control rather than public interest.

“When those people were rejoicing, I saw them and I was really very ashamed seeing that people are rejoicing, that the statutory allocation meant for their state is being cut off. So, their intention is not the welfare of Rivers people because they’re the ones that’d be affected. Their intention is once it satisfies their quest for power and resources, if the Rivers people want to go and die, they can go and die.
