According to Professor Ishaq Akintola, Nigeria is an interreligious state. He claimed that although Nigeria is home to many different religions, its culture is not secular. Professor Ishaq Akintola made this statement during an interview with a journalist on Arise Television. During the interview, Professor Ishaq Akintola said, “Nigeria is not a secular state. People need to stop using that expression. Nigeria is an inter-religious state. Nigeria is a state with several beliefs and several religions. We are not Russia or China; we are Nigerians. We are Christians, we are Muslims, and we are traditionalists.”

It is important to note that it is clearly stated in the Constitution that Nigeria is a secular state and as such, no government or state shall adopt any religion as state religion.
