Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported that the country’s consulate in Kazan condemned the treatment and issued a formal protest note to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Iranian government demanded explanations for the incident, which it described as an example of police brutality.

Despite the diplomatic backlash, the students were released later on Friday after intervention by the Iranian consulate.

The Kazan police, however, stated that the incident began as a physical altercation among students and that officers detained those involved in the conflict.

The police report did not specify the nationalities of the arrested individuals.

Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, has followed up on the matter, with Tehran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, also condemning the mistreatment of Iranian students.

Jalali demanded that Russian authorities hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

The regional Investigative Committee in Kazan confirmed the arrests, noting that the students were detained for allegedly using violence against a police officer.
