Professor Charles Nwekeaku, a vocal critic of the insecurity afflicting the region, recently spoke with Arise News about his personal experiences traveling through the South East region of Nigeria and said he is concerned about the inconsistent security presence, especially on Mondays when the sit-at-home order still unofficially governs activities despite government efforts to restore normalcy.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

“Surprisingly, if you go to the South East, every 500 metres, you see military checkpoints, but on Monday, in most parts of the South East, you don’t see them,” Nwekeaku revealed. He emphasized that the absence of military and police personnel on Mondays is particularly concerning, as these federal agencies are supposed to maintain security at all times.

Sharing a specific incident, he recounted how a security officer once reminded him that it was a Monday—a day that has become synonymous with enforced shutdowns due to the now-outlawed sit-at-home orders instigated by factions supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“There was an occasion when I was traveling, and a security man had to remind me, ‘Prof, you don’t know that today is Monday?'” Nwekeaku recalled. He expressed shock and dismay, questioning the security apparatus meant to protect citizens. On another occasion, while en route to the airport for a flight back to Abuja, he encountered a similar situation, where a security agent reminded him of the sit-at-home day.

The sit-at-home protests were initially declared by IPOB to demand the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, but despite attempts by state governors and security forces to stop the practice, fear and intimidation have kept many businesses and institutions shut on Mondays.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
