He claimed that although the military has upgraded its tools and capabilities, the security situation in Nigeria is being jeopardized by the activities of theater commanders who embezzle money intended for their wages. He said, “There’s already momentum in the direction of improving the security. Billions of Dollars have been spent to buy helicopters and so forth. It is not a big deal that the security situation has improved. The aspect of in which Nigerian military had deficiencies in equipment and things like that, maybe they have made up for it. The other aspect is that we now have a situation in which the theatre commanders are stealing money they are supposed to use to pay salaries. In Nigeria today, Unfortunately, one of the most actively engaged in corruption practices is the military officers. I read about one military officer buying houses in Atlanta. It’s very baffling”.
