The Rivers Unity Coalition (RUC), a pro-Wike political organization, demanded in a recent video posted on Symfoni TV that Hon. Oko-Jumbo, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, be arrested immediately for allegedly instigating political unrest and undermining the rule of law. Additionally, the group threatened to stage widespread protests throughout the state unless commissioners working under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s government resigned within 48 hours.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
The RUC, a coalition of political activists and supporters of former Governor Nyesom Wike, made these demands during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday. The group’s spokesperson, Chief Emeka Nwosu, accused Speaker Oko-Jumbo of orchestrating a series of legislative actions aimed at destabilizing the state and creating a rift between the executive and legislative arms of government.
“Hon. Oko-Jumbo has consistently acted in bad faith, using his position to create unnecessary tension in Rivers State. His recent actions, including the passage of controversial bills and attempts to impeach key officials, are clear efforts to undermine the peace and stability of our state,” Nwosu stated. “We demand his immediate arrest and prosecution for incitement and abuse of office.”
The group also directed its ire at Governor Fubara’s commissioners, accusing them of complicity in what they described as an “anti-democratic agenda.” The RUC warned that failure to resign within 48 hours would result in widespread protests and civil unrest across the state.
“We are giving all commissioners serving under Governor Fubara 48 hours to resign. Their continued stay in office is a betrayal of the people’s mandate and a threat to the democratic process. If they fail to heed this warning, we will mobilize our members and supporters to occupy the streets of Rivers State until our demands are met,” Nwosu declared.
The ultimatum comes amid escalating political tensions in Rivers State, with the state legislature and the executive arm locked in a bitter power struggle. Analysts have expressed concerns that the situation could further destabilize the state, which has been grappling with security challenges and economic difficulties.
In response to the RUC’s demands, the Rivers State government dismissed the group’s allegations as baseless and politically motivated. A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Joseph Johnson, described the ultimatum as an attempt to intimidate public officials and disrupt governance.
“The Rivers State government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the welfare of its citizens. These baseless allegations and threats from a faceless group will not distract us from our mandate to serve the people,” Johnson said.
Meanwhile, Speaker Oko-Jumbo has yet to respond to the RUC’s call for his arrest. Political observers have urged all parties to exercise restraint and seek dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis.
As the 48-hour ultimatum ticks down, residents of Rivers State brace for potential unrest, with many calling for calm and a peaceful resolution to the political impasse. The situation remains fluid, with the possibility of further developments in the coming days.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
