Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), recently gave an explanation of the commission’s position on the ongoing dispute in the Rivers State House of Assembly. The lack of action from INEC has led to public criticism, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over the commission’s delay.

During a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, Yakubu explained that the commission’s inaction stems from conflicting court judgments surrounding the legitimacy of the various factions within the Assembly.

He highlighted that both the Rivers High Court and the Federal High Court have issued rulings, creating confusion about the rightful representatives.

As a result, INEC has not proceeded with bye elections, including one necessitated by the death of a member.

According to The Nation, Yakubu indicated that the commission aims to conduct bye elections by mid-December, addressing vacancies in the House of Representatives and several Assembly seats.

He elaborated on the complexities of the situation, noting that three members declared the seats of 25 others vacant, which led to reciprocal declarations.

To navigate these challenges, INEC is consulting with legal experts and the public.

Yakubu also mentioned ongoing discussions about allowing political parties to nominate replacements for deceased or resigned members, a practice common in other countries but not currently adopted in Nigeria.

He emphasized the logistical difficulties faced by INEC, citing that the commission has handled approximately 20 bye elections.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
