In an interview with THE SUN, social analyst and activist Emmanuel Umohinyang discussed Tinubu’s involvement in the 2012 demonstration against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. However, Umohinyang clarified that the protest was not against the subsidy removal itself but against the corruption in the subsidy system.

In 2012, the Nigerian government announced the removal of the fuel subsidy, leading to widespread protests across the country.

Many Nigerians were angered by the sudden increase in fuel prices, which directly affected their daily lives.

However, Umohinyang stated that the core issue that led to Tinubu leading the protest was not the subsidy removal but the corruption that surrounded it.

He pointed out that many fuel importers were involved in fraudulent practices, such as round-tripping with corrupt customs officials at the ports, which caused the government to lose millions of dollars.

Umohinyang described how the subsidy system was being misused and how it was benefiting only a few people while the majority of Nigerians suffered.

He said the protest was a call for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources, especially in the fuel sector.

Umohinyang argued that the removal of the subsidy by President Tinubu was a necessary step.

“In 2012, I was one of those who occupied Ojota against the Jonathan administration. People have always mistaken that protest against the issue of subsidy.
