The Supreme Court’s decision, delivered on Thursday, grants financial independence to these LGAs by banning all 36 state governors from accessing or tampering with the funds designated for local governments. This ruling aims to enforce the constitutional provision that ensures the financial autonomy of local government areas.
The court declared that it is illegal and unconstitutional for state governors to receive, tamper with, or withhold funds meant for LGAs. Such practices, the court noted, violate section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the financial independence of local governments.
In response to this landmark ruling, All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain Nasir El-Rufai expressed his views on his official X account.
