El-Rufai Response As S’Court Ruled That All The 774 LGAs In Nigeria Should Be Given Financial Autonomy

 

After the Nigerian Supreme Court’s decision on the financial autonomy of local government areas (LGAs), former governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai voiced his concerns on social media. The Supreme Court’s decision, delivered on Thursday, grants financial independence to these LGAs by banning all 36 state governors from accessing or tampering with the funds designated for local governments. This ruling aims to enforce the constitutional provision that ensures the financial autonomy of local government areas.

The court declared that it is illegal and unconstitutional for state governors to receive, tamper with, or withhold funds meant for LGAs. Such practices, the court noted, violate section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the financial independence of local governments.

In response to this landmark ruling, All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain Nasir El-Rufai expressed his views on his official X account. Reacting to a report shared by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, El-Rufai reflected on the ruling.
