Defence Headquarters Reaction to Allegations of Six-Year Naval Rating Incarceration

 

An probe into the alleged incarceration of a navy officer, Seaman Haruna Abbas, who is said to have been detained in captivity for more than six years without being given a chance to defend himself, has been ordered, according to Leadership, by General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The wife of the jailed naval rating talked on a well-known Human Rights radio program in Abuja, bringing public attention to the incarceration, which was purportedly carried out on orders from a senior commander. In response, General Musa, through a statement issued by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had taken notice of the circulating video clip.

The statement assured the public that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

It further emphasized that the military’s court-martial process, though thorough, is designed to ensure fairness and justice in line with military procedures and national laws.

“The DHQ wishes to assure the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

The military court-martial process ensures fairness, equal opportunity, and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law,” Brigadier General Gusau said in the statement.

General Musa has instructed an immediate investigation into the matter, promising that the outcome will be made public as soon as the investigation is concluded.

He also urged the public to avoid spreading unsubstantiated information and to remain patient while the investigation proceeds.
