The head of the Yoruba sociocultural group Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, counseled President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against running for reelection because of what he saw as a lack of support from the North. In an interview with The Sun, Adebanjo urged Tinubu to concentrate on his legacy while highlighting the necessity of constitutional changes to rectify the disparity that favors Northern interests over Southern ones. Adebanjo asserted, “Tinubu should abandon the idea of running for a second term. He is deceiving himself. The North will not support him again because his current actions do not align with their interests.”

He cautioned Tinubu against relying on superficial Northern support and urged him to leave a lasting legacy by spearheading constitutional reforms. Adebanjo warned that failure to address Nigeria’s restructuring could lead to division, highlighting the injustices perpetuated by the current constitution.

Furthermore, Adebanjo reminded Tinubu of their shared struggles and urged him not to forsake his roots. He pointed out Tinubu’s previous success in amending the national Constitution to assume the role of Lagos State governor and advocated for a shift to a parliamentary system, criticizing the corruption associated with the presidential model in Nigeria.
