According to Lloyd, Governor Eno requested that the Council Chairmen continue in office until elections could be organized, ensuring continuity in local governance. He pointed out that this scenario closely resembles the recent actions taken by the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule. By following the precedent set in Akwa Ibom State, Lloyd asserted that the Rivers State House of Assembly’s decision to extend the tenure of Local Government chairmen has now provided legal backing for their continued stay in office.
In an interview with AIT, Lloyd stated, “The government of Rivers State and his agencies were unable to conduct LG elections. The House of Assembly extended the tenure of the Local Government chairmen who were elected by six months. This is not unprecedented, this has happened in Zamfara State and Akwa Ibom.”
He further elaborated on the situation in Akwa Ibom, saying, “The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, extended his LG Chairmen tenure because he was unable to conduct elections. He pleaded with those who are in his cabinets to continue in office until such a time when the election will be conducted. Now this was what Martins Amaewhule assembly rose up to do.
