The results of the recently held local government elections in Kwara State have drawn criticism from former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who claims that the elected persons do not have the legitimacy or the mandate of the people, according to Daily Trust. Saraki made these comments in a statement issued to Daily Trust on Wednesday by Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, his press officer for political and local matters. According to Daily Trust, the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) declared the APC as winners in all 16 local government areas. However, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected these results, alleging that the process was deliberately manipulated to disenfranchise its supporters. The PDP insisted that the actual outcome of the election was in their favor, pointing to irregularities in the conduct of the polls.
Saraki highlighted several issues with the election, including the limited supply of ballot papers and the absence of result sheets in some polling units. He noted that in certain areas, the votes were stacked heavily against the APC, but these results were undermined by procedural inadequacies. He praised the resilience of voters who resisted attempts to frustrate the process.
He further lamented that the local government areas are now led by individuals who, in his view, lack the legitimacy to govern, having not secured the true mandate of the people.
