In an unexpected admission regarding his upbringing, Buba Galadima, the chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), disproved the widespread belief that he is a member of one of these ethnic groups by saying that none of his parents spoke Hausa or Fulani. Galadima recalled his previous statement supporting Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as a potential leader, citing her capabilities rather than her ethnicity or religion. He expressed frustration that people often associate him with being Hausa or Fulani simply because he is a Muslim, despite his parents not speaking either language.

According to him, “Here in this studio, I was on record to have said that Obasanjo was going; if Iyabo Obasanjo is the best person that can lift Nigeria up, I would vote for her. That is why, when you’re talking about ethnicity and religion (about me), I just laughed. I’m not in that class; I don’t talk about religion, and I don’t talk about ethnicity because you don’t even know what my tribe is. I have told you before that before my father and mother died, none of them spoke one word of Hausa, let alone Fulani, but because we don’t know each other in Nigeria, I’m looked at as Oh, Buba, he should be a Fulani man.
