He was spotted chuckling with other MPs when he made this remark during a plenary session in the Red Chamber. According to a report from PoliticsNigeria, Recently, Nigeria’s state-owned oil company, NNPC Ltd, raised petrol prices by more than 15%, marking the second increase in less than a month.
The product is now sold at over N1,000 per litre in several parts of the country, following the government’s decision to end the subsidy program due to financial strains.
This isn’t the first time Akpabio has made similar remarks. At the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities, Youths, and Women Group Sensitisation Conference in Port Harcourt in July, the Senate President joked about Nigerians protesting economic hardship, saying that while they protested, he and other National Assembly members would be “eating.”
