as Protesting Youths Chased Him from Council Secretariat, Rivers LG Chairman Flee

Allwell Ihunda, the chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), almost avoided death on Tuesday when he was chased by demonstrating youths out of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area administration, according to a PUNCH report.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Ihunda, who is the outgoing chairman of the local government, was on his way to the council offices accompanied by aides and security details when the incident occurred.

As he tried to enter the premises, he was met by a group of youths who had occupied the entrance, immediately setting upon him.

The youth started shouting, chasing him. They tried to get hold of Ibunda, who raced towards his car.

Ihunda’s security details were forced to fire shots into the air to disperse the aggressive crowd, allowing the chairman to jump into a waiting SUV and speed away as the youths continued hurling abuse.

The confrontation appears to be the latest flare-up in an ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

The local government chairmen, who were elected under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike, have vowed not to vacate their offices despite the expiration of their tenure on June 17.

This stance is based on a recent amendment to the local government law made by the state House of Assembly, which extends the chairmen’s tenure by six months due to the failure of the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to conduct new elections.

However, in a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, Governor Fubara directed the heads of local government administrations to take charge of council affairs from June 19.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
