The Igala nation’s inclusion in the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) proposed “United States of Biafra” has been categorically rejected by the Igala Youth Council (IYC). The council chastised IPOB for including the Igala in their planned Biafran federation without getting their approval in a statement issued Monday in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
The statement, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Michael Joshua, revealed that this decision was made during an emergency meeting held on December 1, 2024. The meeting was prompted by a viral video in which IPOB outlined its plan for a 40-state Biafran nation.
According to Punch, Joshua emphasized that the Igala people were neither consulted nor invited to deliberate on such a proposal and firmly rejected the attempt to drag them into IPOB’s secessionist movement.
The council declared, “The Igala nation demands good governance within the Nigerian state and has no interest in being part of IPOB’s agenda.”
The IYC also highlighted the controversial nature of IPOB’s activities, which include a weekly “sit-at-home” order that has faced criticism for its economic and social disruptions in the Southeast region. While some see IPOB’s actions as a push for self-determination, others view them as a threat to national unity.
