According to Defense Minister: Give Us 50 APCs and We Will End Boko Haram, Bandits in Two Months

The Nigerian Defense Minister made a daring claim in an open interview with Voice TV: if the military is given the tools they need, Boko Haram and banditry will be eradicated in two months. He is specifically advocating for the deployment of 50 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) to areas where these criminal organizations are prevalent. The minister claims that the country’s security requirements cannot be met with the defense budget’s present allotment.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Speaking candidly about the situation, the minister recalled a recent visit to Sokoto, emphasizing that his trip was self-sponsored and undertaken out of a personal commitment to improve the security of the region. “I was in Sokoto, the member will testify to that. I went to Sokoto by myself, nobody sponsored me to go to Sokoto. I did it in my pocket just to ensure people labor both their two eyes closed,” he stated, highlighting his dedication to the cause.

However, he pointed out a critical issue: there is no adequate provision in the national budget to equip the military properly. “In fact, the Ministry of Defense is supposed to provide some equipment for some of the zones, but we cannot. Out of what we have in 2024, we can be able to provide just 20 APCs. What can 20 APCs do in Kaduna alone, Mr. Chairman?” he questioned.

The minister’s solution to the ongoing security crisis involves significantly boosting the military’s capability with more APCs. “If we can be able to have 50 APCs that can go inside the bush to push out those criminals, I assure you, within two months, we’ll finish the issue of banditry,” he confidently stated. His comments reflect a sense of urgency and frustration with the current lack of resources, despite public concerns about defense spending.

The minister’s remarks are likely to stir discussions about the effectiveness of the national defense budget and whether more direct investments in military resources could make a meaningful impact on the fight against insurgent groups and criminal gangs terrorizing parts of the country.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
