According to Ayuba John, National Coordinator of the Gwoza Community Association, over 65 members of his own family were among the numerous residents who fell for the Boko Haram trick. He disclosed that persons working in locations like the abattoir, where they were susceptible to influence, were the target of Boko Haram recruiters. According to him, several of them even sold their belongings to help pay for the group’s expenses.

In John’s words: “I have more than 65 members of my family who joined Boko Haram, my blood relations both from my maternal and paternal family. The attraction was illiteracy and then the influence of the Boko Haram who came to abbatoir because most of them are butchers in Maiduguri abbatoir.
