Dele Farotimi, the human rights activist who was recently placed on remand by an Ekiti Magistrate Court, would be released provided he can provide evidence to support the accusations against him, according to Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
According to Vanguard, Farotimi had accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.
He was arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command and remanded after his accusations.
Babalola’s lead counsel, Owoseni Ajayi, explained that Farotimi’s remarks were defamatory and aimed at damaging Babalola’s hard-earned reputation, which cannot be remedied by damages.
Ajayi further stated that Farotimi’s issue with Babalola stemmed from a 2014 land dispute case in which Babalola had filed for a correction of a clerical error in a Supreme Court judgment regarding land ownership.
Farotimi, who was not involved in the case, had tried to frustrate the judgment by representing one of the affected estates.
Ajayi argued that if Farotimi can prove his claims of judicial corruption, he will be free, as the law allows free speech but not speech intended to harm another’s reputation.
