If You Change It For Them, It Means The National Assembly Can Extend Tinubu's Tenure—According to Inibehe Effiong

Prominent attorney Inibehe Effiong has warned of the possible repercussions of extending the term of local government councils in Rivers State. According to him, this would create a risky precedent that would enable the National Assembly to change the constitution on its own, prolong President Tinubu’s term, or even their own.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Effiong emphasised that once elected officials take the oath of office, their tenure cannot be altered, and any changes to the law must be prospective, not retrospective. He cautioned that tampering with constitutional terms would undermine democratic principles and pave the way for abuses of power.

According to him, “Once they’re elected and they subscribe to the oath, that cannot be changed because if you change it for them, it means that the national assembly today can amend the constitution and extend President Tinubu’s tenure, and can even amend the constitution and change their own tenure.
