Governor Abba Yusuf:"How Can Anybody In His Right Senses Ban Sallah Festivities In Kano?"

The State Police Commissioner’s decision to forbid Eid-el-Kabir celebrations without first contacting the Governor or the State Security Council has drawn criticism from the Kano State Government. According to The Sun, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Haruna Isa Dederi brought attention to this matter at a press conference held at Government House.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Dederi explained that certain individuals are trying to destabilize the state. He noted that despite efforts to maintain order, including the recent passage of the Kano State Emirate Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024, tensions remain high.

This bill was passed by the State House of Assembly on May 23, 2024, and signed into law by the Governor after consulting with stakeholders and law enforcement agencies.

The Attorney General also addressed the controversy surrounding the former emir, who allegedly had his fundamental rights infringed upon, including claims of house arrest.

The government refuted these allegations, stating the former emir stayed at Gidan Nassarawa voluntarily, accompanied by security guards.

Governor Abba Yusuf emphasized his constitutional duty as the Chief Security Officer to protect lives and property. He explained that when the former emir arrived with a group threatening public order, the governor issued an arrest order to maintain peace, though the arrest was never executed by security agencies.

The government criticized the Police Commissioner for acting unilaterally in banning Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, which they believe exacerbates the situation and undermines state authority.

“How can anybody, in his right senses, ban Sallah festivities in Kano? And when did the State Governor cease to be the Chief Security Officer of the State that he will only see such a ban on social media?”

The statement raised doubts, accusing the Commissioner of persistently defying justifiable directives and concealing himself behind “orders from above.”

The government urged all well-intentioned Nigerians and Nigeria’s allies abroad to step in and provide the Kano people with the right to live in peace.

It said, “Any attempt by anybody to undo that is an assault on democracy.”

The Kano people were asked by the administration to carry on with their lawful activities in peace, and they were promised updates as circumstances developed.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
