Sokoto Cleric Leads Eid Prayers, challenges academics With Contrary View

A preacher from Sokoto named Sheikh Musa Lukwa led his congregation in eid prayer on Tuesday, according to Daily Trust. Wednesday was designated as the first Shawwal and Eid day in 2024 by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), which is led by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto. The council said the crescent moon was not sighted on Monday, the same view earlier espoused by Saudi Arabia authorities.

But Lukwa, who has over the years disobeyed the Sultan’s directive on moon sighting, led prayers at his Juma’at mosque around 8:30am.

Lukwa justified the move by stating that our neighbour Niger Republic had seen the Shawwal moon on Monday.

“We were certain that the Niger Republic was the location of the new crescent, but there were claims of sightings in various areas, even here in Nigeria.”

After the country proclaimed Tuesday to be Sallah Day, we have a certified video clip of their council of Ulamah confirming the investigation. As a result, we are now required by the teachings of the Holy Prophet to celebrate Eid on Tuesday.

Why can we accept it from the Niger Republic, which is closer to us, if we can accept that from Saudi Arabia?

While I am not advocating that all Muslims in Nigeria should perform their Eid prayers on Tuesday, we have no moral excuse for skipping the prayer because some of our neighbours have seen the new moon. And keep in mind that it is forbidden to fast on Sallah Day, he stated.

Lukwa has been disobeying the Sultan’s orders because he feels that the monarch is pressuring Muslims to adopt Saudi Arabia’s moon sighting, which goes against the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
