Professor Pat Utomi, a political economist and former Obi-Datti Campaign Council member, has claimed that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state, was overlooked in the early strategy of several important players before to the 2023 election. He stated that the primary objective was to leverage the organizational structure of the Labour Unions and their extensive grassroots networks. He disputed the claims that the NLC and TUC lacked a solid political structure. He highlighted how building on the Labour Union structure laid the foundation for what eventually evolved into the Obedient movement.

He said in an interview with AIT, ”We began an initiative to try and bring together several political parties and the Nigerian Labour Movement. You have heard Ayuba Wabba speak on this matter, many of those meetings took place in his office and he chaired those meetings. And a very big partner in the process was my friend, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana.

And in those meetings, our goal was to take the Labour Unions and the base they had as structure. Some people are saying they don’t have structure and I think that is false. The first thing that hit me when we started this was how we were going to build a mobilization platform. The plan was to take the base of the NLC and add it to the small platforms of other political parties. And then build the momentum of what came out to be the Obidient movement. When we started the conversation for 2023 election, Peter Obi wasn’t even in the picture.
