However, after the Nigerian army successfully ousted Boko Haram from the area, conditions steadily improved. Ndume recounted having to fly to Yola and then take an Air Force helicopter just to reach Gwoza when visiting his constituents in the aftermath of the military operation.
But now, the senator states he can drive directly from Maiduguri to Gwoza during daylight hours without needing armed escorts – an unthinkable scenario just a few years prior when the area was under Boko Haram’s control.
In Ndume’s own words: “Boko Haram had the audacity to declare my own town and LGA as their caliphate headquarters. If I had to go there after the Nigerian army chased them away, I had to go to Yola, then an Air Force helicopter would take me to Gwoza to land in order to see my people.
