In a frank interview with Channels TV, Senate Chief Whip Senator Ali Ndume draws comparisons between the political environments in Nigeria and the United States, pointing out that while in Nigeria elections are heavily influenced by tribal and religious affinities, in the United States candidates such as Hillary Clinton have been able to represent states other than their home state. He claims it is hard to draw comparisons between Nigeria and other countries because of the country’s tribal variety. He observes that as he is not a member of the Kanuri tribe in Borno State, he is unable to speak their language. Even in your state, they will say this tribe and they will go back to say this religion. That is what we are doing. You can’t do that. It’s not the same, America is one but Nigeria is 440 in one. We have over 440 tribes in Nigeria, and every tribe is claiming except for Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa. I cannot speak Kanuri in Borno. I’m not Kanuri, I’m not Fulani, I speak Hausa.
