Sen. Ireti Kingibe, a senator from the FCT, has questioned the logic of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s decision to demolish existing highways that had ten to fifteen years left on their lives, calling it a poor use of resources. She maintained that there are good roads in places like Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, and Wuse. She asserts that locations with poor roads, such as Lugbe, Yanyan, and Karu, cannot claim the same thing. She bemoaned the apparent waste of money in tearing down good roads when it might be used to build new, vital infrastructure in other areas of the Federal Capital Territory. She did, however, applaud the minister of the FCT for significantly improving the area of addressing insecurity in the FCT.
She said in an interview with Channels TV, ”In the beginning, I felt he [Wike] wasn’t taking security seriously as it should. But I must confess that Wike has stepped up on the subject of insecurity but there are still many other issues. FCT has a lot of places where we need roads and I really can’t understand the point of scrapping perfectly good roads when we could actually spend the money building new roads.
The roads that Wike is scrapping off have at least 10-15 years on them, it’s a waste of resources. Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, and Wuse have the best roads. There are places like Lugbe, Yanyan, and Karu where their roads are terrible. And I can take you to places where, going there will actually make you sick. That’s actually how bad the roads are.
