As reported by Premium Times, Vice President of Nigeria Kashim Shettima has accused unidentified forces of undermining the Bola Tinubu administration’s efforts to stabilize the economy. Shettima blamed politicians and smugglers who were unable to ascend to power through democratic channels for the current food crisis while speaking at the Public Wealth Management Conference in Abuja. The vice president highlighted a recent incident where 45 trucks of maize were intercepted while being smuggled into a neighboring country. Shettima emphasized the existence of 32 illegal routes in the Ilela axis (Sokoto state), contributing to the surge in food prices. The National Bureau of Statistics reported a food inflation rate of 35.41% year-on-year in January 2024, a significant increase from the previous year.

Shettima underscored the need for unity, calling for a shift from political disputes to effective governance. He announced the federal government’s plan to raise $10 billion through public asset optimization to stabilize the economy. The administration aims not only to stabilize the national currency but also to double the country’s GDP growth rate in the next eight years, demonstrating a commitment to addressing economic challenges.

“Forces are hell-bent on plunging this country into a state of anarchy, those that could not get into power through the ballot box. Instead of waiting for 2027, they are so desperate; that this country can fall apart as far as they are concerned. But we are going to visit them,” the vice president said.
