“A Leader Must Think Before Speaking” – According to Kenneth Okonkwo on Peter Obi’s Gowon Stance

Nigerian politician and attorney Kenneth Okonkwo recently discussed his thoughts on leadership in an interview with Arise News, highlighting the value of careful communication. Okonkwo, known for his direct and analytical approach to politics, stated:

“I’ve always said that it’s good for a leader to always think before he talks. In other words, before you make a statement, it must be a statement you have thought through, and you should be able to stand by it. You should be able to articulate your view at any point and stand by it.”

He further explained that a leader who believes in what they say should not feel the need to offer an explanation. However, if the leader does explain their position, then they must be held accountable for both their actions and words.

The remarks from Okonkwo follow Peter Obi’s controversial decision to celebrate General Gowon, who led Nigeria during the civil war. Obi’s actions drew criticism from sections of the Igbo community who still harbor resentment towards Gowon’s role during the Biafran conflict. However, Obi defended his decision, citing forgiveness as a key principle in his belief system.

While Okonkwo didn’t directly critique Obi, his comments seemed to reflect the need for leaders to be prepared for the consequences of their decisions, especially when they touch on sensitive historical issues.

The interview concluded with Okonkwo reaffirming the importance of accountability: “If he needed to explain and he explained, then you should hold him responsible for his own actions and for his own words.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
