According to Daily Post, Sowunmi’s decision would have extended to Wike’s status as a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. He stated unequivocally that no party should allow one of its members to serve in the opposition party’s government while still holding a position of influence within the original party. This stance, according to Sowunmi, would ensure discipline and prevent any member from undermining the party’s structure or objectives.
Moreover, Sowunmi would have taken a tough stance on Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s former presidential candidate. He was critical of remarks made by Atiku’s supporters, claiming that the PDP was “dead.” Sowunmi suggested that as Chairman, he would have issued a strong reprimand, demanding that Atiku rein in his supporters and clarify the direction of the party. He rejected the idea of the PDP being led by acting officials, insisting on firm leadership to maintain the party’s relevance.
This approach, Sowunmi believes, is essential for the future of the PDP. He argued that political parties must be proactive and disciplined in dealing with members who show disloyalty or publicly undermine the party’s integrity. He stated that allowing such behaviors would be detrimental to the PDP’s ability to serve as a viable political force in Nigeria. He believes that if the party is to recover its strength and position in Nigerian politics, it must hold its members to higher standards and ensure that loyalty is paramount.
In his remarks, “When you are on sabbatical, your membership is frozen, and when you return, it’s activated. By freezing his membership, that means you can’t be in charge of the party’s structure either in Rivers or anywhere. You can’t attend our meetings, and if you return, we are going to give you three months for debriefing so that you can dump all the jargon you learned from them.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
