Maddison has since completed a £40million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Since his arrival, the England midfielder has scored two Premier League goals and provided a number of assists.
Chelsea have spent £1 billion in a little over one year, but did not splash out on Maddison, who suffered relegation with Leicester City last season.
That left the path clear for London rivals Tottenham to swoop in.
The Blues opted against moving for Maddison as he does not fit the club’s current recruitment model. It is claimed that the Blues were only looking to bring in players over the summer who are under 25 years of age – which rules Maddison out, as he will turn 27 in November.…… Continue Your Reading
