Following the assassination of Chief Job Shagari, a third-class traditional ruler, on August 12, the Itama community in Kogi State’s Dekina Local Government Area is in disarray. Shagari got into an argument with a man called Sunday, who threatened him, according to his wife Vera. According to Channels TV, on the night of the incident, Shagari went out at around 9 p.m. to withdraw money from a nearby POS, and shortly after, gunshots were heard. Within 20 minutes, it was reported that he had been killed. The following morning, security forces arrived and made some arrests, but soon after, outsiders began to set homes on fire. Vera indicated that the community has been engulfed in fear and unrest ever since.
In her words, “On Monday around 9 p.m my husband went to collect money from POS, we now started hearing gunshots. 20 minutes after, people began to shout that they have killed His Royal Highness (HRH). The following morning soldiers and police came here and made some arrests. After that, some strangers came and began to burn houses here.
