He stated: “In Nigeria, it is the people who oversee processes that are the problems, not the law or the processes themselves. We have enough laws in Nigeria. In fact, there are two points in the petition that the election tribunal, if interested, can afford to deal with within a week. What are the issues I am talking about? Part of the Labour Party’s petition, and I think that of the PDP also, is alleging that the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was convicted on charges of drug trafficking in the United States. On this issue, the court needs not to waste our time. It can subpoena the US investigators who handled the matter to come into Nigeria and testify whether the allegations are true or not. This would make it easier because our laws allow for someone to be subpoenaed even from America.
The other aspect of the petition that can be quickly resolved is that of the alleged double nomination of the vice-president-elect of the APC, Shettima. At the point of being nominated as the vice-presidential candidate, there are allegations that he also submitted himself to be nominated for the Senatorial ticket in Borno State. So, this is a matter of documentation. The tribunal can simply recall these documents and look at whether indeed, Shettima put himself forward as a Senatorial candidate in Borno and also put himself forward as a VP candidate in the APC. If true, that is a double nomination in the face of the law and we know what the outcome can be.
