A statement by NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar said the prohibited items were seized over a period of time after a search of the cells.
Umar quoted the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa saying the destruction of the contraband was in line with sections 51 and 52 of the Service Standing Orders.
Nababa thanked the officers for their display of professionalism and assured the public that the service would rid all custodial centres of prohibited items.
The CGC hinted that the search of cells “will be a continuous exercise to ensure that inmates comply with standard operating procedures”.
The destruction which was held at the NCoS headquarters in Abuja was done 48 hours after DAILY POST reported a search of the Kirikiri prison in Apapa, Lagos.
The authorities dispatched a team to scour jailhouses after the Department of State of Services, DSS, arrested an inmate who threatened Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughter Kiki.
Sources said the DSS tracked a phone used by “a slim young man” to Kirikiri, eventually taking him into custody after a three-day operation which commenced March 12….. Continue Reading
