He stated emphatically that he is a devout Muslim and that, due to his lineage, he is presently unable to compromise his views. He explained that his comment was meant to imply that a Muslim should not be elected Senate President because there is a Muslim President and Vice President. He pleaded for forgiveness from the Muslim community and vowed never to utter such words once more.

He claimed, “I sincerely had no intention to harm anyone or the Islamic faith.” Despite this, a flawed person. I ask for forgiveness from my Lord and from society. I pledge I would never use such terms again since I am a devout Muslim and my family has faithfully followed the teachings of Islam for more than 1,400 years.
