In his apologies, Senator Shettima reaffirmed his strong commitment to Islam and said that, given his ancestry, he is unable to compromise his faith at this stage of his political career. He clarified that his prior statement was designed to draw attention to the fact that the President and Vice President are both Muslims and to express his opinion that a Muslim should not also serve as Senate President.
