Sani said as a senator in 2017, he discovered that his account was credited with 13.5 million naira each month, separate from his official salary which was 750,000 naira. He disclosed that senators and members of the House of Representatives receive three main payments. He said the first is their salary, which has gradually risen, with the current Senate members earning about 1 million naira and the second payment is for the running costs of their office, which is money directly deposited into their accounts. He added that the third payment is for constituency projects, which are funds allocated to lawmakers to develop their local areas.
In Sani’s words: “As a senator in 2017 I disclosed that I found out that my account was credited every month with 13.5 million naira and that was separate from my salary which at that time was 750,000 naira. So when any person is elected into the parliament whether as a senator or member of House of Reps, there are three categories of payment he receives. The first one is the salary, during our time it was 750,000 naira and then, the 9th Senate was almost 850,000 naira and then this 10th Senate they have a million naira. The second payment is the running cost of office, it money that is credited to your account.
