Many bandits were killed in a clash with security forces and vigilantes in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State after an attempt by bandits to rescue one of their arrested members was foiled.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when a group of armed bandits stormed Kurawa village, attempting to free a gang member who had been captured after robbing a commercial motorcyclist the previous day.
According to a source, the bandit was arrested while refueling the stolen motorcycle and was handed over to security operatives.
He said, “In retaliation, the gang launched a rescue mission, killing three villagers before facing fierce resistance from the army and vigilantes.”
He further explained that the bandits came in large numbers but were met with stiff resistance, adding that many of them were neutralized, while two were captured alive.
A lawmaker from the area, Alhaji Sa’idu Ibrahim, confirmed the attack, stating that at least four dead bandits were found in the aftermath, though many more may have been taken away by their comrades.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Sokoto Police Command were not successful, as the command’s spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, could not be reached.
