Russia war: Ukraine agrees to immediate 30-day ceasefire after US meeting

Ukraine has agreed to accept a United States proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire amid the ongoing war with Russia.

It has also committed to taking steps towards restoring a lasting peace following Russia’s invasion three years ago.

This was stated in a joint communiqué issued by the US and Ukrainian delegations during their meeting in Jeddah on Tuesday.

Kyiv and Washington “took important steps towards restoring lasting peace for Ukraine,” the statement read.

It further stated that the US would communicate to Russia that reciprocal action from Moscow is essential to achieving peace.

Additionally, the US will “immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine,” the statement added.

Recall that Russia and Ukraine have been engaged in conflict since February 2022, with significant casualties recorded on both sides to date.
