The demise of Major-General Ekundayo Babakayode Opaleye (rtd), the erstwhile Military Governor of Old Ondo State, has shocked Chief Olabode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chief Bode George, who described Opaleye’s death as a major loss that has taken away a committed military commander who gave his all to Nigeria, reportedly expressed profound grief, according to the Nigerian Tribune. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

It was reported that in a statement that was released on Sunday in Lagos State, George, who succeeded Opaleye as the Governor of old Ondo State from 1987 to 1990, paid tribute to the late military governor, emphasizing on Opaleye’s commitment to good governance, calling him an excellent administrator.

George, also known as the Atona Oodua of Yoruba land, in the statement shared a personal connection with Opaleye, recalling their relationship since 1964, when they both sat for School Certificate Examinations. He praised Opaleye as a brilliant student who excelled in his papers and continued to distinguish himself in the Nigerian Army.

While he was talking, he said, “Our boss, General Ibrahim Babangida, posted him to Old Ondo State in 1986 to take over from Admiral Akhigbe.

In 1987, General Babangida sent me to Ondo to take over from him and everything was seamless.

I was shocked today when I heard that he died suddenly. A dedicated, disciplined and patriotic officer is gone and we are really going to miss him.”

Bode George said that even after his retirement, the deceased was still involved in community service, and that was why he was given the chieftaincy title of Balogun of Erunmu, Owu, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
