He said that the Constitution has made it clear that the oil and other natural resources belong to the federal government, yet there are still some ignorant people claiming that the oil belongs to them.
He said that if they are to follow such arguments, then Northerners can also claim that the oil belongs to the North. He said the reason is because 78 percent of the oil in Nigeria is offshore.
He said that due to the environmental hazards that come with extracting oil from the land, most oil companies have found it more economical to get the oil through the sea.
Speaking further, he said that he was part of the team that was involved in the Gulf of Guinea talks (the laws of the sea). He said that the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea was used, and that the law states that every state that has a border with the water would have an exclusive area. He said that means a zone has the exclusive right to its own economic and security activities, and to protect its land, territories and fishing.
He said, “One state in the North can take more than two of the spaces of the total Southeast. The North has the landmass. What I am saying is that if 78% of that landmass gives you mileage into the sea where your oil comes from, the 78% of whatever mileage we get into the sea can therefore be claimed because the 78% landmass belongs to the North which is the majority.” CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
