In response to Senator Abdul Ningi’s accusations that the 2024 budget was padded, Professor Usman Yusuf, a former CEO of the National Health Insurance Scheme [NHIS], claimed that the budget included extravagant expenses, citing the high cost of solar lighting and boreholes as examples. He questioned the rationale behind these exorbitant costs, calling them evidence of systemic corruption. He highlighted the stark contrast between the extravagant spending of representatives and the pressing needs of the population they are meant to serve. He expressed disappointment in the current state of affairs and emphasized the need for accountability, stating that the populace is closely monitoring the situation and is not proud of the conduct of their representatives.

Sen Abdul Ningi who was representing Bauchi Central was suspended by the National Assembly after a House hearing this week. Senator Ningi who had claimed that about 3.7 trillion naira in the budget could not be traced after his investigation. However, some Senators in the house have referred to this as a civilian coup to usurp the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President.

He said in an interview with Arise TV, ”There are 109 Senators, do the maths. If each one of them gets about 250 million naira, it will be a total of 27 billion naira. After they were given 164 million by the President to buy bulletproof cars. So it’s all about them and not the people that sent them there. This cannot continue and we the people are watching, we are not proud of them.

A solar light was selling on the budget for over 190 Million naira, over 180 million for each borehole. Come on, if this is not corruption, then what is it? At a time when our people are dying of hunger, at a time when our Children are being admitted with Kwashiorkor, at a time when millions of patients have abandoned taking their medications because they can’t afford it.
