In an interview with Arise TV, Professor Akinyemi said that since state governors had protection from prosecution. He made it clear that INEC employees and RECs are not immune from prosecution. He believed that the system would eventually evolve if it had individuals like Mike Igini who were willing to fight to the last end to imprison dishonest members of the commission. He claimed that Nigeria needed somebody like Mike Igini to lead INEC. If you recall, Professor Peter Ogban was found guilty of manipulating test findings and was given a three-year prison term and a N100,000 fine in 2021.
He stated:
”We need more Mike Igini in the INEC. We need more people like him as RECs and even as the INEC Chairman. Mike Igini jailed Professor Peter Ogban in 2019 senatorial election over manipulation of results. I know of people with integrity in this country because I have served on many committees. But something goes wrong when you are dealing with election of governors and the Presidential election. People start to compromise when they get money. We need a change of mind so that we can turn around the system.”…… Read more
