Dr. Sam Amadi, a well-known attorney and political analyst, has come out to explain why the Department of State Services’ (DSS) official statement on the plot by some people in the country to install an interim government does not hold water amid the palpable tension surrounding it.

He asserts that the Constitution mandates that the Senate president assume control of managing the government’s affairs until new elections are held and a winner is declared in the event that the courts declare the February 25 presidential elections invalid and order a new election after Buhari has turned over power to the president-elect on May 29.
He stated:
“There is a constitutional framework that deals with any challenge to the presidency. There is no such thing as an interim government in the way people conceive it. People think it is an external contraction that deals with an emergency or unscripted gap in governance. It’s not true. First of all, if for any reason the election tribunal decides to nullify this election and asks for a rerun, and maybe before that re-election, Mr. President’s tenure has expired on May 29, the constitution is very clear on what should happen.
In this case, the president and his vice must leave office and the senate president steps in until June 4 when the new national assembly comes in. At that point, the Chief Justice of Nigeria must then step into the office of the president until a fresh election is conducted and a winner emerges. So, this talk of an interim government is a contraction. There is no such provision in the constitution.”….. CONTINUE READING
