The international cable television network GOTV has received a warning from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a prominent Islamic human rights organization, asking it to stop airing the Christian televangelism show Faith on its main channel. Professor Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, expressed this grievance, which has garnered a lot of attention, calling the scenario “offensive, nauseating, and denigrating” to the Muslim community in Nigeria.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
In a press release, it was noted that the Faith program, which is dedicated to Christian televangelism, now occupies the top channel on GOTV, a position that was previously reserved for advertisements promoting various other programs.
MURIC argues that this change compels GOTV viewers to encounter Christian content by default upon turning on their televisions, irrespective of their personal religious beliefs.
The organization claims that this action constitutes an imposition of Christian religious programming on the Muslim demographic, characterizing it as “religious apartheid.”
MURIC maintains that GOTV’s decision to feature Faith on such a prominent channel infringes upon the rights of Muslim viewers, asserting that it violates their freedom of choice and their right to select television programming without being subjected to unsolicited religious content.
The group emphasizes that this practice is divisive and unjust towards Muslims in the nation. as reported by Politics Nigeria.
In light of this situation, MURIC has called for GOTV to promptly relocate the Faith program to a different channel and restore the primary channel to its previous function.
Furthermore, the organization has cautioned that if their request is not fulfilled within a week (by December 9, 2024), they may resort to peaceful measures, including urging Muslims to unsubscribe from the service.
“Meanwhile, MURIC encourages Nigerian Muslims to maintain patience and to remain peaceful and composed. We must not succumb to provocation, lawlessness, or violence.
“The law supports our position, and we possess the right to reject a service provider that shows no regard for our faith or for Muslim customs.”
GOTV would enhance its service by reinstating its previous practice of allowing viewers to resume at the last channel they were watching as soon as they turn on their television sets.
“Nigerians are already facing significant challenges, and GOTV should not contribute to increasing the tension within the country,” the statement concluded.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
