In 2019, El-Rufai reportedly made around 500 trips to Abuja to persuade APC party chieftains on behalf of Sani’s candidature for the 9th National Assembly seat representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, as recounted by Suleiman in an article published by DAILY POST. Suleiman was expelled from the party due to her outspoken opposition, as stated in a letter signed by Ali Maishago, the Ward Chairman, and Saka Bassahuwa, the Secretary, dated March 31, 2024.

He explained that El-Rufai blocked his run for reelection to the 9th Senate because, while serving as chairman of that committee, he refused to let the state tap into a $350 million loan from the World Bank.
