On Friday, Ejimakor revealed that an attempt by Kanu’s legal team to visit him was blocked by DSS operatives. This occurred just 24 hours after Justice Binta Nyako, who has presided over Kanu’s trial since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021, recused herself from the case.
Kanu’s lead counsel, in a statement on behalf of the legal team, accused the DSS of violating court orders and the Nigerian Constitution by denying them access to their client. The statement suggested that the DSS might have canceled future visitations as retaliation for Kanu’s legal actions that allegedly “embarrassed” Justice Nyako.
Ejimakor lamented the potential consequences, stating, “The DSS, acting on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, has unlawfully isolated Kanu from his lawyers, making his solitary confinement absolute.” He added that he was uncertain when, or if, they would be allowed to meet Kanu again.
