President Bola Tinubu has been praised for suspending AbdulRasheed Bawa, the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), from his position as executive chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL). In an interview with AIT, Adeniran asserted that Bawa wasn’t qualified to lead the anti-graft organization, saying that he had previously been charged with selling trucks confiscated by the commission in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, for pennies on the dollar. Adeniran continued by stating that the suspended EFCC chairman has a poor track record and that a thorough investigation should be conducted into the many charges made against him. He bemoaned Bawa’s allegedly extravagant lifestyle and said the group had always wanted him gone.
“Bawa’s track record wasn’t great, thus he wasn’t qualified to serve as EFCC chairman. When he was in Port Harcourt, he was reportedly accused of giving away a few trucks valued at between N20 million and N30 million each for as little as N100,000. We also learnt of his flagrant disregard for court orders and his unlawful tactics for detaining and questioning people. Some who were in the know and recalled that former Governor Matawalle accused him of wanting $2m also highlighted his lifestyle. Although we haven’t verified the truth of that accusation, it is nonetheless an allegation. We wanted him gone, and we wanted someone with a clean past and a modest way of living.
