Former Nigerian presidential assistant Bashir Ahmad discussed the divisive topic of apparent antipathy against foreigners in the Igbo region of Nigeria in a conversation on X (previously Twitter).CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
His comments were prompted by remarks made by Dr. Ruben Abati and echoed by Rotimi Adeosun. Bashir Ahmad began by acknowledging the necessity of addressing the stereotypes surrounding the Igbo people.
He stated, “The comments generated following Mr. Ruben Abati’s remarks on Igbos being hostile or accommodating do not look good. Though, it is important and in all honesty to acknowledge that it is not fair to say all Igbos are hostile, however, the feedback from those who have lived in Igbo land suggests a notable number might be.”
This response was in reaction to Dr. Abati’s comments, which were further emphasized by Rotimi Adeosun.
Adeosun wrote, “Dr. Abati is very apt! The Igbos are very hostile towards ‘outsiders’. I’ve lived, worked in the East and have experienced the hostility to ‘strangers’. All their preaching about ‘diversity’ is fake and it’s just a ploy to covet others’ belongings.”
Bashir Ahmad urged the Igbo community to take proactive steps to change these negative perceptions.
He advised, “It is very important for the good-hearted among them to actively and publicly work towards changing these negative stereotypes. They should encourage their brothers to welcome everyone to the beautiful East for a more inclusive environment.”
Ahmad highlighted the potential benefits of fostering a more welcoming environment, suggesting that it could have significant economic and political advantages.
He noted, “Open the East for all and doing so will not only benefit the visitors but also bring immense economic and political advantages to your region and the people.”
To illustrate his point, Ahmad cited Peter Obi, a prominent Igbo figure, as an example of someone who could champion this cause. He said, “Peter Obi could serve as a good example for this course.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
