The community’s decisive action is being hailed as a significant step toward addressing the rampant insecurity plaguing the region.
The villagers, having received intelligence of an imminent attack, armed themselves with locally fabricated weapons and strategically positioned themselves to confront the bandits.
Unlike previous attacks where residents fled in fear, this time the villagers were prepared to defend their homes.
According to Abubakar Nura, a local resident, the bandits were met with unexpected resistance as the villagers unleashed a barrage of gunfire from various angles, forcing the attackers to retreat.
“The bandits, while struggling to escape into a nearby bush, returned fire on the locals during which three people were killed,” Nura recounted.
“Even before the bandits retreated, there were already twenty-five corpses of them lying in the blood who had been fatally hit by the unresisting flying locally made ammunition fired by the ambushing locals in defense of the community.”
As the bandits attempted to flee, the villagers pursued them, ultimately killing 12 more, bringing the total death toll to 37.
The community’s remarkable show of unity and determination has been lauded by security experts who see it as a positive example of grassroots mobilization in the fight against banditry and terrorism.
However, while experts recognize the effectiveness of community resistance in the face of insecurity, they also caution against relying solely on vigilante efforts.
Dr. Kabir Adamu, Managing Director of Beacon Consulting Limited, emphasized the importance of collaboration between local communities and formal security agencies.
“If you don’t protect them, they will protect themselves. So, this is a natural consequence of the failure of the state to protect them. The more that happens, the more they will seek ways to protect themselves,” Adamu stated.
He further warned against sidelining the official security apparatus, stressing the need for synergy between communities and law enforcement.
“While community resistance is commendable, it is essential that we strengthen our formal security institutions to ensure they are capable of protecting citizens. Vigilante groups should not replace the role of the state, but rather complement it.”
The experts also urged communities and individuals to avoid collaborating with bandits as informants or suppliers of weapons and logistics.
They argued that any form of cooperation with criminal elements undermines efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
The successful defense of Matusgi serves as a stark reminder of the resilience and resolve of local communities in the face of adversity.
As the battle against insecurity continues, the actions of the Zamfara villagers may inspire other communities to take a stand and protect themselves from the scourge of banditry.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
